How does a dentist prepare a tooth with a suspected crack for a crown without making the crack worse and possibly causing loss of tooth?

Does the tooth have a suspected crack? If so, it may not be restorable. Prepping the tooth will not make the crack worse. If the tooth is cracked, it may be the time for an implant.

The Dr. would remove the cracked and weaken areas of the tooth and restore the tooth with a bonded crown build-up core. The Dr. would then prep the tooth for a crown, scan the tooth or take an impression with VPS material, fabricate a temporary crown and send the impression for scan PDF file to the dental laboratory for fabrication of a new crown to be cemented at a future date.
