A member asked:

Can damage to cell tissue and acute inflammation cause neutrophils and platelets to be high? i was in a car accident and afterwards, a blood test showed elevated neutrophils and platelets?

The body produces defensive substances in response to whatever stresses encountered. Your accident no doubt signaled that bleeding is a possibility (increase platelets) and that the external barriers might have been compromised (infection possible to increase neutrophils). Things will even out as you recover.

All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, acute inflammation is generally associated with elevated white blood cell and platelet counts. Wish you good health!
