Viral infection: Most likely viral upper respiratory infection but with the thicker mucus coughing up could also have secondary bacterial infection requiring antibiotics. Go to your primary if you have been sick for a week and the cough/mucus getting worse.

See below: Sounds like you have a viral upper respiratory infection and bronchitis possibly influenza. If you don't get better in the next few days see your md to be sure you do not have a bacterial infection +/- pneumonia.
