A member asked:

Is crohn an autoimmune disease and can it be treated by a rheumatologist? thanks?

Is generally treated by a Gastroenterologist, mostly because most of the complications (fistula, abscesses, oral or perirectal disease, peritoneal scarring) are bowel related. Lots of joint complications as well but these are usually of less immediate concern.

It is usually treated by gastroenterologists, who may use drugs that change immune responses in the body. Rheumatologists often use similar types of drugs and in some cases the same drugs
