Rabies is a deadly virus spread to people from the saliva of infected animals. The rabies virus is usually transmitted through a bite. Animals most likely to transmit rabies in North America include bats, coyotes, foxes, raccoons and skunks. Saliva on objects or the fur of other animals cannot infect you even through a cut, because the virus does not have the ability to live long in the open.
