A member asked:

How high is the risk of being overdue, past the 40 week mark and past the 41 week mark, with a healthy pregnancy?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

As per the previous answer to this question, the risk for adverse effect for a post-term pregnancy include sudden fetal distress. The placenta may not function well statistically at 41 w's plus, so elective induction is appropriate, followed by C/S if the fetal heart cannot tolerate induction. The purpose is to present conditions conducive to a healthy infant's safe delivery.
