A member asked:

Are fibrocystic breasts always visible on an ultrasound? my ultrasound came back all clear, but my left breast is tender and my doctor had suspected breast cysts. i'm concerned with why there is tenderness and no cysts or anything in the ultrasound?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Some fibrocystic breasts have actual cysts (which are almost always seen on ultrasound) , but some have diffuse fibrous changes without cysts, & might look relatively normal on ultrasound & cause tenderness to the patient at times. A normal ultrasound is reassuring that no mass is present. Fibrous changes can show up on a mammogram but you really don’t need one done at your young age.
