What is the difference between the first dose of the moderna vaccine and the second?

The first and second dose of the COVID vaccinations (whether Moderna or Pfizer) are actually exactly the same. The reason individuals need two doses are because a single dose only gives partial protection, while a second dose gives maximal protection.
