A member asked:

I smoked while recovering from acute bacterial bronchitis and now still cough week passed with clear mucus can it develop to chronic bronchitis ?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

No Although they sound similar acute vs chronic bronchitis are entirely different and 1 does not develop into the other. Acute bronchitis usually a viral, less commonly bacterial infection. Goes away (sooner or later). Chronic bronchitis = irritation of bronchial tubes due to tobacco use, smoke, air pollution, smog, etc. Does NOT get better unless you remove the pollution
