A member asked:

What can we give to a 1 month old baby to assist with mucus/congestion in his chest?

The first months are troubled by narrow nasal passages & exposure to dust, fragrences, smoke & other irritants.Baby tries to flush these out of the nose with mucous but this often ends as congestion & produces rattling with breathing. The best rx is washing out the nose with copious amounts of saline & suctioning the remainder. Eliminate irritants from babies environment & this will happen less.

There are no approved medications for 1 month old babies. Only supportive treatments - saline solution, suctioning , humidifier, steaming up the bathroom. Chest percussion to loosen up chest congestion. See peds if having trouble breathing , not eating , irritable and not as playful.
