Spotting can happen at any point in the menstrual cycle and as long as the bleeding is light there is no need fir concern. For discolored discharges that cause cramping, I suggest you make an appointment to see your OB-Gyne and have them examine you to make sure this does not need any treatments and to find out what it is exactly

Menstrual irregularities are not uncommon and anovulatory cycle is a common cause. If you miss more than two periods it would be time to see your doctor. If you do not wish to be pregnant, use contraception all the time. You may consider implanted contraceptive or an IUD.
