Both the blood pressure of "153/88" and the cholesterol level of "5.4 mmol/liter" are high and present long and short term cardiovascular problems. See your internist for treatment, as at "48 years, male gender" the risk of stroke, heart attack is elevated. Ask your physician about diet and salt intake precautions, and possible statin therapy.

When checking blood pressure a person should be sitting, resting, with their feet on the floor, in a quiet room for five minutes, and not eating or smoking for at least 30 minutes. BP changes easily from eating, emotional stress, drugs, herbs, coffee, smoking, moving, pain, illness. Were you fasting? cholesterol levels change when eating. High blood pressure is not diagnosed from one reading.
