A member asked:

My father, 73, incidently got very fast development of alzheimer. neurologists seeing mri said it started 5-6 ago. do you suggest spinal tap or an amyloid pet test for me? could i be a heriditairy? at how high risk am i?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Dementia: I am reluctant to call this rapid onset of dementia Alzheimer's disease. The first thing needed is an accurate diagnosis. I agree that more neurological testing has to be performed including examination of cerebral spinal fluid. A rapidly progressing neurodegenerative process is a very difficult workup and requires a neurologist with expertise.and experience with such problems.
