Very variable: A transient ischemic attack is indeed a temporary event lasting on average about 20 minutes. It should be considered an early warning sign, and heeded to prevent stroke, which would cause persistent neurological deficit. There is no precise timing here, but, nonetheless, evaluation and prevention should be initiated once the diagnosis of TIA becomes apparent.
