Maybe: A1C is a test representing about 3 months of glucose metabolism. It does not change quickly but represents an average of all glucose levels over that period. T2DM does run in families, partly from genetics & partly from lifestyle. Being aware you have risk & adopting a better diet will have a beneficial effect. Yu should discuss this all with your doc. I wouldn't retest for at least 3 mo.

3 months: It is not useful to retest A1c before 3 months. Try to lose weight, about 10% of body weight, if you are even mildly overweight. In addition to minding your diet, exercise at least 150 minutes/week. Wish you good health!
