A member asked:

Mom is 64 yrs old and hit menopause 14 yrs ago. she has been bleeding for 3 days. her ultrasound is normal, waiting for pap smear test once bleeding subsides. how serious is this? what could be the potential causes and next steps?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Vaginal bleeding ?'s: Post-menopausal bleeding in a 64 yo female may arise from the lining of the uterus (endometrium) , so a pap smear may not detect any abnormality. A minor procedure to obtain endometrial cells may be necessary to determine the cause of bleeding (a "dilation and currettage"). Consult a gyn physician about this "next step".
