Genital herpes: With or without treatment, symptoms will clear within a few weeks. Herpes is permanent. If HSV2 (like most cases) you can expect recurrent outbreaks 3 to 10 times a year, usually milder than the first one. The virus is often present between outbreaks and can be transmitted sexually to uninfected partners. If HSV1 (from oral sex), fewer outbreaks and less virus between outbreaks. See comment below.
