Hello, my name is jesse. i was wondering if you had any ideas on how to get better sleep at night? i try to go to bed at the same time every night and have the same nightly routine. i tend to wake up 5-6 times regularly throughout the night. sometimes it is very hard to shut the brain off. any ideas or tips and how to help with this? thanks in advance. sleep?

Replace thoughts: It sounds like you need to "disconnect" earlier in the evening. Try turning off all media (esp news, facebook, youtube, twitter) up to 2 hours before going to sleep. Fill this time with Meditation/Prayer, deep breathing exercises, thankfulness journaling, and soothing bath or shower. Make sure to take control of random thoughts that try to infiltrate your brain during this time and change focus.

Need to examine: It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without taking additional history, physical examination and may be some tests. It would be prudent to see your doctor and discuss if you may be depressed. Counter-intuitive as it may seem, exercise may help. Start with low intensity exercise such as walking and gradually increase the intensity as tolerated. Drink more water. Wish you good health!
