Clearing infections: Mucus can be clear, whitish, yellow, green or black. The purpose of mucus is to solubilize, capture and expel foreign material such as dust, soot, viruses, bacteria etc. When a person has an infection and the mucus turns odorous and yellow or green, the mucus contains large numbers of dead virus/bacteria and dead cells. Proper hydration can help keep mucus liquidy instead of thick and sticky.
