A member asked:

My wife's heart rate at rest is higher than 120, we did see the doctor yesterday and she has been given some meds, just worries that her heart rate is constantly high?

Several causes: 120 is indeed a high resting heart rate which can have many causes: fever/heart disease/dehydration/anxiety/hyperthyroidism/anemia/medication side effects- just to name a few. Beta blocker medications are often used to slow heart rate while a thorough evaluation is done (lab tests/EKG/eval for life stresses/etc)-I trust her Dr is continuing to search for the underlying cause

Should investigate.: If the heart rate is persistently high, further studies are warranted. While common causes include anxiety, fear, etc other conditions such as an overactive thyroid, chronic infection and heart disease should also be considered. Your doctor may have already done some tests, but please be sure to have a discussion with your doctor.
