A member asked:

If there are white blood cells in the urine, does that mean i have an infection or something else?

Could be: Pyuria or elevated wbcs in urine can mean infection, inflammation or stones. Infections can be in the urine, prostate, epididymis or elsewhere. This should be more fully evaluated with a urine culture and a visit to a urologist.

Inflammation: Though infections typically demonstrate white blood cells (wbc's) in the urine (also known as pyuria) , pyuria is also seen in other situations such as irritation from a urinary catheter, or in excessive wbc's in the blood such in leukemias. For uti's, pyuria is accompanied by other symptoms such as pain on urination, increased frequency and urinary hesitation.
