A member asked:

I used baking soda as toothpaste with finger (no toothbrush). i came to know that baking soda should not be used regularly. i used it for almost 1 year 8 months. should i be worried that it might have abraded my tooth enamel or any other damage?

Yes: Baking soda is like powdered sandpaper when it comes to tooth enamel. You probably did abrade some of the buccal enamel. It will probably not make your teeth more prone to caries. Use a soft toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste.

A Better Alternative: There is a popular personal health care myth that the commercial care products can be improved upon by using inexpensive commonly available alternatives. If you are in Timbuktu, and have no choice then go for it, but toothpaste is a highly researched and carefully compounded hygiene product that is hard to beat. There are at least ten ingredients to help you clean and protect your teeth.
