SEE BELOW: The root is where the back end of the meniscus attaches to the top of the tibia tears and displacement of tears occur usually with twisting forces that stress and pull on the meniscus when it is compressed and caught between the tibia and the femur as twisting occurs.

Meniscus tear: Displacement of a meniscal tear means that a portion or all of the meniscus has flipped over on itself or shifted out of its normal position between the tibia (shin) and femur (thigh) bones. Tears at the root of the meniscus as well as tears within the body of the meniscus can displace. Displacement of part or all of the meniscus on MRI usually indicates a tear of that meniscus pad.
