A member asked:

Is diabetic nerve damage only a secondary result of damage to the vessels that supply that nerve? or is the nerve damage a direct result of diabetes on peripheral nerves?

Secondary damage: High Blood Glucose can damage the small vessels leading to the nerves. If the nerves are not receiving proper nutrients, they begin to die off. Maintaining a consistently low blood glucose prevents this from happening not only to the nerves, but also to the eye cells, kidney cells and other organ systems.
