Work up needed: While the majority of times causes for back pain are benign and pain becomes chronic, whenever the pain is no longer responding to conservative treatments further work up is needed, as even benign causes may progress enough to cause significant pain and functional limitations. Starting with your doc is recommended.

Low back pain: Other measures which may relieve low back pain caused by strains are applying alternating cold and hot compresses for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off, rubbing liniments like BenGay, prescription for applying lidocaine patches, muscle relaxants, physical therapy & ultrasound treatment. Serious causes of back pain must be evaluated by a physician.

Agree with Drs. C&P: For the long term regular aerobic exercise will improve the effectiveness of pain medication and prevention of pain by improving muscle tone and conditioning. It may take three months of regular exercise to see a meaningful effect. The exercise should be strenuous enough to induce sweating by raising core body temperature. Wish you good health!
