All True: HPV is one of the few sexually transmitted infections that can lay dormant in the nerve cells of the skin for your lifetime. It may be that your initial diagnosis was missed and that you have had this for years. Many strains of HPV do not cause cervical cancer, but only genital warts. Stress and physical hormonal changes can cause a reactivation of the infection.
