About the same: Emax crowns require about the same amount of reduction of the tooth as porcelain fused to metal crowns or other all ceramic crowns. There is a very small difference (slightly more--about .3mm) in the amount of tooth reduction necessary and it should not be the determining factor in the type of crown used.

Emax: There are 2 types. Ips e.Max press lithium dis. Which can be use with only .3mm of reduction for venners, and ips e.Max CAD lithium dis. Which can require more reduction. It depends on which emax that is used. A full crown generaly req. Bet. .7mm & 2mm of reduction depending on material, front teeth sometimes can get less reduction based on not needing so much strength for chewing, see a dentist.

The same or less: Due to its strength emax can be fabricated thinner but the aesthetic outcome is based on the planning of ceramic thickness allowing for varying levels of translucency. In many cases a little more reduction allows for a better result and more life like results. Emax is not my first choice for the best looking and most natural looking restorations.

It depends: Ir depends on what you are comparing the emax crown to--other types of porcelain crowns, metal crowns, or porcelain-on-metal (pfm) crowns? Generally the reduction is slightly more for all-porcelain crowms like emax, less for pfm, and least of all for metal. It also depends on the position of the tooth and what you are trying to accomplish cosmetically.
