I have hallux valgus and my lapidus fixation is non-union. what should i do? doc is now suggesting plates. i'm 6 weeks post-op. should i try again or can i get the screws removed? looking for second opinions?

Premature?: Six weeks does not equate to a non-union. The area needs to be immobilized for up to another 2 months. Admit not a lot of experience with non -unions. I feel too early to give up unless a sizable gap is present or displacement of the osteotomy .

6 weeks post op is likely not long enough to confirm that the arthrodesis (fusion) has failed unless the bones are unopposed and there’s screw fracture or infected hardware. I recommend getting another opinion from a different foot and ankle surgeon prior to hardware removal and plate and screw fixation.
