I fell down the stairs pretty hard yesterday afternoon. i hit my upper back on a step pretty hard to the point it knocked the wind out of me. today my spine is tender where i hit. should i be concerned? no other problems such and numbness etc..?

Would not be surprised to hear that you have suffered bruising, and have an area of tenderness, but not feasible, here at this site, to evaluate potential vertebral fracture. If concerned, see your doctor and consider imaging.
