It started off as a toothache, now my gums are swollen and they hurt. dentist was closed but she went ahead and prescribed antibiotics + chlorhexidine and said she will see me next week. what could be going on?

Infection: You appear to have an infection. It may be caused by a necrotic nerve in the tooth, or a periodontal problem. In either event, use the medications as directed and follow up next week with your dentist since the meds will not cure your problem, just mask the symptoms until you can be treated. Pain/swelling: Your symptoms indicate an infection(s) of teeth, gums, or both. Your Dentist provided prudent treatment, prescribing antibiotics to limit the spread of the infection. When. she sees you the antibiotic will have reduced the extent of your infection, allowing more effective treatment.
