A member asked:

We are newly expected parents and owners to 3 dogs for the past 12 years. from a medical perspective is there any concerns in terms of germs to a newborn that we should be prepared for? or aware of? as our dogs are part of the family.

Isolation: Understand that there are some dogs that are compatible with infants/children & some not.Understand that there are some actions infants/children do to dogs that can trigger anger/aggression in those dogs. If you can reasonable isolate the infant from exposure to these pets until you see what happens they may be a reasonable mix, but do not assume it will happen. They should never be alone together

Not to worry: If your animals have had routine care for the years you have had them and are house pets and not roaming free outdoors, then they would have been checked over the years for things that could be a potential problem. Recommend you bring a few blankets home from hospital before baby comes home to allow pets to become familiar with the new baby scent. Congratulations!
