A member asked:

Can you hurt yourself yawning? can you rip an artery or pull a muscle or anything like that?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Very rare, but yes: Since the jaw opens at the temporal-mandibular joint, over wide opening with an unstable joint could produce a shift within the joint and dislocation. Also there are several muscles along the mouth floor which could go into spasm from a wide yawn. Again, these are rare but I’ve seen both, in my practice.
