Seeing black specs in your stool is not a sign of cancer my gp has said. the whole stool would need to be black and tarry. right?

Maybe: A lot more information is needed to make that diagnosis- your history, symptoms, appearance of stool, Hb level, stool test, family history etc. If some concerning factors do exist then a person may need to get checked for colorectal cancer. Take care.
