A member asked:

New and substantial protrusion of 11th and 10th ribs on left side. dr. mentioned palpating an enlarged spleen. ct scan of upper left quadrant showed evidence of the rib protrusions, but no reason for them. possible cause?

First thought: My first thought would be a rotation of those ribs into that position. Some have vertebrae in their back (which anchor the ribs) that can be rotated slightly, making ribs more prominent on one side & less so on the other. A good exam could detect this.

Rib protrusions: Possible causes of rib protrusions, which are more common in the left side of the rib cage, are trauma, spinal curvature(scoliosis) and muscle weakness. Rib protrusions can impair your ability to fully exhale. You may want to have an evaluation by a thoracic surgeon who may recommend physical therapy.
