A member asked:

Are the long-term effects of wildfire smoke similar to that of cigarettes? my 1 year old baby has lived in an aqi of 200+ (400-660 all last week). if this happens every year, how will it affect my son's health long-term? risk of lung cancer/asthma?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Not particularly: The lung itself has the capacity to remove most of the particulate from smoke exposure over time. Asthma is heavily influenced by genetic factors & may emerge with such stimulus earlier but not be caused by this exposure. We have little data on cancer risk from wild fires but I doubt it can compair to pack a day smoking for years.
