Pulled muscle: Were you diagnosed as having a muscle problem, and not a ligament, tendon, or neurologic one? Temperature therapy probably won't hurt, but may not help. Would be wise to see your Physician for appropriate diagnosis and establishing a treatment plan that addresses the diagnosis.

No harm in it: There's no harm in using icy hot, and you may feel better. It is mostly for comfort and will not help your shoulder to heal. If your shoulder injury is not improving, I would see your Dr to determine what the cause may be.
