I have lupus nephritis. i have had 2 kidney biopsies, one in 1997 and one in 2011. my doctor wants another biopsy. how many kidney biopsies can i have and why is another necessary when we know i have lupus?

Monitoring damage: The Kidney biopsies are not a diagnostic tool for Lupus, but to determine the health of your kidneys and the progression of damage that the lupus does to the kidneys. They will continue to do biopsies every 7-10 yrs so that they can adjust the treatment based on the progressing damage to your kidneys.
