Dr. Richard Pollard answered

Specializes in Anesthesiology

See below: If it is uncomplicated, and done early in the morning, it can be done as an outpatient procedure. Otherwise it will be an overnight stay. If the surgeon uses a laparoscopic technique then you will require a general anesthetic. Other techniques to do this can be done under regional.

Hysterectomies: In the usa hysterectomies are done using general anesthesia. In selective cases spinal or epidural anesthesia may be warranted. It is done by one shot injection or by leaving a catheter in the back through which more numbing medicine can be injected if the operation lasts longer. The patient is sedated throughout. Lasts 1 hour and more, depending on the surgeon's skills and difficulty of the case.
