Doctor to evaluate: A primary care doctor can evaluate to see why a headache would occur after running upstairs. Important details to tell the doctor include how long the headaches last, how much exercise the person does, if other exercises cause headaches, if he's not drinking enough fluids, if he has any neck aches or pains, if he has blood pressure problems, any family members with migraines, etc...

Exertional headache: A person who gets bad headaches after running up the stairs may have an exertional headache, which is a headache type that is associated with physical activity. The trick is to either avoid the offending activity or to scale back the activity, and then increase activity slowly. Definitely something one should see the doctor about.
