Sprain: The obvious answer is you have created muscle injury to the point your pain sensors recognize it. Minor sprains from overuse are common among athletes or regular folks. The extent of the muscle injury is hard to define without an exam & function testing. Reducing the intensity or frequency may help it resolve. A period of rest before resuming workouts would be prudent. See your doc if it persists.

Stretch: In addition to the previous answer regarding sprains and strains and resting, stretching before and after is just as important. If you're not sure how to stretch your shoulder (or any other) muscles, you can consult with a trainer to be sure you're doing the proper stretches, and doing them properly. There also may be online instructional videos from trainers. If not better, please see your doctor.
