Chest pain: Sharp fleeting chest pain provoked by a deep breath may be from chest wall injury or inflammation, pleurisy, pneumonia, pulmonary embolism or pneumothorax, but in my experience, in the the absence of other accompanying symptoms, it is often caused by a pinched intercostal nerve or muscle that runs between 2 ribs. This tends to resolve on its own after several days of no strain on the chest cage. ?MD
