Is it a good idea to take kids (middle school age) to daytime rallies against racism? would it be good for them to have those experiences to balance against the nightly rioting they see on social media?

Discuss instead: Taking middle school aged kids into large crowds at this time is putting their health at risk. Even during the day, there is chaos, running, and some violence. The kids can get separated from the adults, can be traumatized by what they see and can be infected with Covid. Better to stay at home and have a really good discussion about the difference. Organize a mini protest in your home and film it.

Risks: First - we are the middle of a pandemic, so recommend avoiding crowds. Second, many peacful protests around the country have turned violent. It isn't worth the risks. Help them to understand what is happening and teach them values while you are providing that lesson.

Agree with Drs. K&F: I admire you sense of social responsibility and raising your children to be a part of the larger society in a productive way. However, talking to them and finding another way to get them involved would be better. You may get them to write letters to authorities expressing their concerns about social injustices. Wish you and your children good health!
