A member asked:

If you have early stage respiratory symptoms caused by als, would a bronchodilator be able to increase the fev?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

ALS: Since the problem in ALS is weakness of muscles of breathing, noninvasive ventilatory measures are usually required to relieve early shortness of breath. Handheld bronchodilator inhalers may not be effective to improve fev1 but oral ones may help. It's important to avoid retention of bronchial secretions and subsequent infection so chest physical therapy is key. A pulmonologist would be helpful
