Herpes simplex: Both men and women can be virus shedders in the absence of overt lesions, but to a lesser extent. You need not have had a prior symptomatic outbreak.

HSV without rash: Unfortunately it is possible to have a herpes simplex infection and to have not had any clinical outbreak previously and yet shed the virus from the mucous membranes. It is also possible that the clinical episode was so mild that it went pretty much unnoticed.
