My son 8 has very swollen areas around the front side and back of his ear. woke up now with it crying that it is painful. i gave him neurofen. looks like mumps but weve been isolating for over 3 weeks now and hes had mmr vacine. what could it be?

Parotitis: The mumps is one cause of swelling & pain within that gland. Other viruses & some bacteria can also. Retention of stones within the ducts can trigger swelling sometimes. If he is not running much fever you can monitor for now but a call to his doc would be the next step.
