What causes inflamed bowels?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

IBD is not IBS: If by "inflammed bowels" you mean inflammatory bowel disease, such as crohn's & ulcerative colitis, it is an over expression of the immune system that causes not just problems with the colon, but sometime diseases of the upper GI tract and surrrounding organs. Genetics, environment, ethnic origin all play a role in "flaring" the disease. Distinguish: infection, ischemia, from symptoms of ibs.
