Lamisil or Lotrimin: In order to know if you need an antifungal oral medication you need to know if you have a fungal infection. This is determined by obtaining a specimen of the nail and submitting to pathology for dermatophyte (fungal) identification. If your specimen is negative, other entities that can cause a nail to discolor, accumulate debris and thicken include watermold, bacteria, and yeast.
