A member asked:

I've read diff things abt covid safety and how long it can remain on grocery delivery package surfaces. would spraying the outside of food packages with bleach-based spray be enough to sanitize them? seems like everything is potentially contaminated.

COVID safety: Usually, COVID-19 virus can live on paper or cardboard surface for a few hours and up to a few days (on average 24-48 hours). When you receive a delivery package, should remove all the visible dirts and thoroughly clean the outside surface with spray or alcohol wipes before you open the package and bring the grocery into your room. Bleach-based spray is fine.

First, important to appreciate data showing rare, if any, cases of COVID-19 resulting from inanimate surfaces of any kind. Second, main vector remains aerosol droplets from a cough or sneeze, and infection afflicts upper or lower airway, not via GI tract. Third, it is an absolute waste of time to sanitize food packages or grocery bags, and there is no rationale not to go food shopping.
