A member asked:

1st mammogram sept 2019 & had probably benign microcalcifications.6 months follow up was two days ago.radiologist dr.said there's been a few new ones and i need biopsy.does an increase in the number of microcalcifications often mean cancer?

No: Microcalcifications can be seen in a variety of lesions including in some forms of early breast cancer. Biopsy is necessary to rule out this possibility

Sometimes: Microcalcifications on mammogram may be due to benign or malignant conditions. If upon follow-up there is increase in their number or some other changes which may be considered suspicious, the radiologist may recommend a biopsy. The biopsy can commonly be performed as outpatient under local anesthesia on a special X-Ray equipped table called stereotactic biopsy.
