What do you mean when you say ssris are recommended when "function is impaired"?

By depression: Sertraline and other ssris are indicated for treatment of major depression which usually impairs patient's functioning. However, one of the side effect of ssris is diarrhea and if you have chronic diarrhea, they may not be appropriate medications for you.
